Classically trained multi-instrumentalist Ross Smithard brings a rich and engaging take on old-time and Appalachian-inspired folk music. His journey began at 15, when he swapped classical violin for fiddle and joined a NSW bush band—sparking a lifelong passion for folk music Ross is an experienced performer who has appeared at major festivals including National Folk Festival, Dorrigo, Illawarra, Port Fairy and Cygnet. His playing draws on a wide range of styles, from old-time and folk to Irish tunes and Western swing, delivered with skill, warmth and authenticity.

A prolific tunesmith, Ross composes original fiddle tunes that honour Appalachian traditions while bringing a fresh, contemporary energy. His award-winning tune Done! took out the Tasmanian Folk Federation Tune Competition in 2023, and he is currently recording a new collection of original works.Based in Tasmania, Ross performs with his string band Up Jumped Trouble and collaborates widely with other musicians. 

He is also a dedicated educator, teaching fiddle, guitar, banjo and mandolin, and an active community leader—hosting well-attended monthly old-time jams that foster connection, participation and a love of traditional music.In 2024, Ross performed at the Mountain Grass Festival, joining forces with Grace Bigby and Jaz Bell of the Double Dole String Band to create the Big Island String Band.This year, Ross will team up with friend, fellow Tasmanian and Up Jumped Trouble bandmate Annette Mundy on banjo as “Calico Corn”, presenting a lively set of original tunes—featuring some from his last album 'Where's the Red Chook?' alongside fresh material from an upcoming release.
